Vernier Networks Extends Functionality of Edgewall Network Access Controllers While Slashing Implementation Time

Network infrastructure security controller adds deployment and enforcement options while cutting implementation time by up to 75 percent

(San Jose CA) - February 14, 2006 -- Vernier Networks today announced it has extended the functionality of its EdgeWall family of network access controllers that provide comprehensive network infrastructure security between the desktop, the server and the network. By adding Layer 3 support, Vernier has added deployment and enforcement options that significantly reduce the risk of security threats and intrusions from external devices and limit access to sensitive assets.

Seamlessly integrating with existing identity and authentication infrastructure, Vernier’s extended network access management increases flexibility around deployment options, resulting in greater control and integration with existing authorization mechanisms to leverage the user identity information for secure access control. The extended deployment footprint is supported by dynamic routing protocol bridging/pass through and single sign-on capabilities.

Responding to customer needs for a faster and easier out of the box deployment, Vernier has added pre-defined access policy and configuration templates for IT administrators who want a quick start on their access control needs. In contrast to other network access control solutions on the market today, the EdgeWall offers a dramatically shorter implementation period – weeks or even months for competing initiatives compared to minutes for the EdgeWall.

“We rely on Vernier’s EdgeWall to secure access to our network and protect critical assets by limiting access to only authorized users,” said Chris Johnson, director of technology for Ledesma & Meyer Construction. “As we expand the role of EdgeWall in our network, we are pleased with EdgeWall’s ability to tightly integrate with our current infrastructure and offer flexible deployment options that meet our company’s individual needs. The new configuration templates enabled us to get started with minimal installation and set up time – a big plus compared to other products on the market.”

Using configuration templates and pre-defined access policies, IT administrators can have EdgeWall up and running in as few as five simple configuration settings. As a result, Vernier has cut the average installation time by as much as 75 percent.

"A growing percentage of our customer base is increasingly choosing to strengthen their internal security and want a quick and easy installation to get started right out of the box," said Rod Murchison vice president of marketing for Vernier Networks. "As an established player in this market, we are continually improving our products to meet evolving customer needs. Accelerating the implementation time was a key point for customers that wanted to hit the ground running with their secure access control initiatives. By adding pre-defined polices and typical configuration templates we were able to address those needs, but still maintain the flexibility and customization required for more complex environments.”

As a network-based agent-less solution, Vernier’s EdgeWall defends against intrusions and attacks from endpoints by screening users and devices for desktop policy compliance, restricting access to network resources, inspecting network and application traffic for worms and viruses, and enforcing remediation on infected and out-of-compliance devices. Unlike disjointed point solutions that require the cumbersome integration of desktop agents, switches and routers, and policy and authentication servers, Vernier’s EdgeWall offers network-based security that employs coordinated countermeasures to protect the network from threats and intrusions at every point of access — wired, wireless or remote.
